Well, tonight I was “honored” to be on the local tv news along with my coworkers. A top ranking state official visited the workplace today to show his enthusiasm for quality job performance statistically. Several of us got to shake his hand and answer his questions about our work. We were in the newspaper last week when the standings were first released, and I was on the front page. Now, we got the tv coverage, and there I was again…my 10 minutes of fame…LOL

Super one Sharkey. I was at the Lake in my Kayak several years ago and hooked on to a huge fish. It pulled my Kayak, with me in it for about twenty minutes before the line busted. I was fishing with lures so I think it was a Bass, however it could of been a cat fish. Good thing the line busted or I could of turned the Kayak over trying to land and get that thing in with me hehehe He was BIG, and he GOT away.

My best (true) fishing story was once years ago, I was fishing for bluegill with live bait and a bobber on the line. Well, I got a bite, but the bobber didn’t go underwater like normal. I started reeling in the line, and I felt resistance. I thought that was odd because I didn’t jerk earlier to set the hook. Anyway about halfway up the line from the baited hook, probably 25 feet or so, a keeper sunfish had been swimming along, bit the line and got its mouth stuck on the line itself. I carefully reeled in the prize and never even had to rebait the hook. Several feet away, it had been left untouched.

Come to think of it,my old Russian blue cat, Benny, from my college days, used to take notice whenever I sneezed. It was a look of concern like, “Well, I hope you are okay, because I want to continue being fed by you…”

The past few nights Shark has been watching dvds of Clint Eastwood’s westerns. I started watching with fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad,& the Ugly, and and Hang ‘em High. In one scene I saw some hombres cut down with a Gatling gun, but no horses fell. The next camera angle showed bodies and three horses on the ground. One to two of those may have been fake. I liked the extras on the dvds with Clint interviewed about making them in Spain, and he brought his own jeans and boots from Rawhide.
They had a now and then from 1964 sets and photos with how the same area looked in 2004. Interesting how some places changed completely with architecture, but the mountains and big rocks were still the same! LOL Even the river had changed its course.

Anyway, as a kid, whenever I went fishing, I would haul them over to grandpa’s and release them into the pond to do my share. Finally, a big old tree fell into the pond, and the fishing wasn’t good except with a cane pole due to all the snags. A couple of years ago, we broke the dam, got the fish out, filled in the old one with a dozer, and started a really big pond/small lake downhill from there instead. It’s now full of big-mouth bass, as grandpa used to call the largemouth bass. Daughter was catching 16 inch fish there last summer.

Rocker,
My grandpa was a farmer who raised corn, soy beans, and Angus livestock. Prior to owning his farm, he had been a deep coal miner starting in his teens and had even gone to Detroit to work on diesel engines during the Depression. Before the coal company finally took his farm in the 60′s, not the one he had worked for, he had also driven a fuel truck in the off-seasons. He was an honest man and hard worker.
What did he get in return? Well, he got the black lung and pneumonia, and the doctor told him he had to get to a warmer climate, or he wouldn’t survive one winter. He moved all right, to FL for that winter, and before that all the farm he could manually haul away to the new one.
Despite his worsening health condition, bureaucracy took its sweet time for several years in order for him to get any black lung benefits. Investments he made into the fuel company he worked for were skimmed away by corporate big shots. Guess who never complained to his family?
To show how honest he was, on the last day he was hauling items from the original farm he homesteaded, he told the coal company, he’d be back the next day to get the fish from the farm ponds. Well, when he came back after dawn, they had dynamited the ponds, and all the fish were gone. Of course, he was going to move them all to his new farm and big pond there.

CB,
I got a bad cold outdoors yesterday, but I had a good time outdoors!
We spent a little time on my family farm, and something that disappeared years ago was finally located! When I was about 6, my grandpa made a square wooden box, poured in some concrete and FL white sand and had me make my handprints. It was so vivid in my memory, seeing the white square with my name and handprints. Then, later that year the coal company took that farm that they had lived on 50 years. Well, my grandpa removed essentally everything from the farm including wagon loads of lumber from the barns he had built himself. The little piece of concrete was by the back door to the house the last time I saw it. Now, that place is just a big lake full of waterfowl amidst the many stripper pits, as they call these big craters in the ground left behind after the coal is mined.
Then, they relocated 25 miles away on a different place they somehow made into their new farm and built a new house. Years ago I asked my grandpa whatever became of the little concrete slab. He and my grandma could not remember, but they said they wouldn’t have left it behind.
Yesterday, beside a tree, wedged between two tree trunk roots in the front yard, I saw a little white 3 inch triangle jutting out of the ground.
It was the slab with my handprints, and I remember that tree being one they didn’t cut down for the location of the new house! The ground was partly frozen, so I didn’t risk prying it up and cracking it in half, but this mystery is solved. Now, there is one more thing to find. Beside the white slab at the old place was a small box of arrowheads and Indian artifacts I found at their old place near the hunting grounds of Shawnee and Kickapoo tribes. They also saved those for me, but I haven’t seen them in years. I am sure they are secure somewhere at the house.
History sure is a funny, elusive thing.

Donna, I can’t suggest a song but that is so sweet of you. She is taking it very hard. I know it helps her to know we care. I have never been there with her grief, so I can’t begin to relate, so sad.
I would of loved to have had the love some folks have, and had I, well the grief comes along with it if they leave first. O my I would savor the memories to get me through the grief.
I do know how hard it is to loose a loved pet and a loved life partner would be intense compared to that. -

Good morning memphis–and everyone else. Hope everyone is having a nice day.
CB, did you say you are going to start riding Snoopy instead of a horse. I don’t know much about mules except that they are supposed to be stubborn. I assume they are pretty sure footed and docile too since I think they use them a lot on trails in the Grand Canyon. Anxious to see pictures and hear about your first ride.
Sharkey, did I read something about your having horses? I know your one daughter wanted one, but I didn’t realize that you had bought any yet. Do both of the girls like horses?
Diane, thinking of you.
Donna, I know what you are talking about at work–sometimes everyone acts really immature.
I might be moving to a small house–I am going to look at it in about an hour. It is about the same rent as this apartment, but I will have to pay for heat and water, which I don’t pay for here.

cowpatti34
Nope not nuts at all Sharkey. I believe beyond belief. I know it was Mr Hurst that pushed me off my feet in his Study at the Castle. I asked someone that worked there, if the place was haunted and they said that where I was is where it would happen if it was going to happen.
They can’t talk about the hauntings because of the millions that go there every year, a big bunch would NOT go if they knew it was Haunted.
No one has ever been shot or killed for that matter, by a Ghost. LOL -
Sharkster
CB,
I know you probably think I’m nuts, but something on the Queen Mary tried to throw my hat overboard! It wasn’t even windy! I figured it was Bob Hope slicing a ghost golf ball off the deck! LOL

O and the Queen Mary is one of the most haunted sights in History. When I stayed over night on the ship, they left me alone hehehe
Not so when I was in the Hurst Castle. -
cowpatti34
Sharkey, one of my girlfriends was in Hughes Harem. LOL She was a beautiful young girl. He made her ride an Elephant wearing a bathing suit in a Movie and she showed me the burns on her legs from the course hairs of the Elephants body. She had on the Bathing Suit, not the Elephant hehehe
-
Sharkster
Yes, CB, I figured Hughes was in/near where you were that I also toured. I recall they had some kind of dome around the Goose when I saw it. I almost lost my hat off the Queen Mary, either Bob Hope or a gust of wind, I guess!
There’s a Howard Hughes tie-in to S. Indiana. Years ago Hughes would fly starlets to French Lick Springs and West Baden Springs. He had an airstrip put in near the casino and resort hotels there. This was a big mafia escape location as well for Capone, etc.
Google French Lick Springs and West Baden. The West Baden architecture is amazing to see, even online. I’ve seen photos of Harlow, Mansfield, Lamour, visiting there back in the day, etc.
-
Sharkster
Rocker,
Seriously, no teasing involved…just a lack of info. as there is no funeral, no nothing, etc. her estate info. is even restricted from the distant relatives, not even an obituary, just some pieces of info, such as the first name I gave tht I knew her by. I know the recent married name is from 30 year ago…several dead ends…
-
cowpatti34
Just received mail from Dorothy, she is still trying to get here. Wish her luck!

Sharkey, I just Googled it. The plant and strip was located very close to Westchester, and we lived there for about six years. Loyola U is in the same area.
-
cowpatti34
OOps, I didn’t read your post correctly. Hughes Aircraft was located in an area that built up after he put the plant there. There was a landing strip and they did testing there. Not a good mix, and the neighbors did a lot of complaining. The Goose was tested over the water and I think never flown again after taking off for that one time.
-
cowpatti34
Sharkey, The Spruce Goose! It was in the Water docked in Long Beach. It has since been Sold and was towed up to Oregon, don’t recall the town.
The Queen Mary is still in Long Beach. I spent several nights on the Queen Mary and took a tour of the Plane when it was there. -

Roller derby was THE thing to watch on TV back in my youth, along with wrestling. Those gals were tough as nails. I probably saw Wanda many times, but I don’t remember their names. JMHO,
Just a couple of days before Whitney died, the press was dragging her down about how bad she looked and wreaked of alcohol at the pre-Grammy parties. The negative press could have had an effect on her end, but, of course, she could have ultimately did herself in, according to the evidence in her hotel room with the mix of available prescription drugs and alcohol…Then again, we weren’t there…
-
Sharkster
Hi Folks,
Cool pics and research here! She went by Wanda to me, but names had changed several times, and early there in CA, protection name changes also with families, relocation, etc. To complicate that, I heard she was married 4-5 times. Also, she had to want to talk about the past, or it didn’t come up much. I know mostly IN connections since knowing her only since the early 1990′s. I’ll try to find out more this weekend. Too bad, I could have asked her up to a couple of weeks ago…

Good Morning. Way back to WW11 I lived in Burbank, near to Lockheed. In fact somewhere in the attic I have an old book with the employes in it. I think is is a Union pamphlet type thing. Can’t remember the year.
They had camouflage netting all over the streets and the buildings. All the cars round the place were covered and most of them were colored sand brown. Funny what we remember from so long ago. -

Ok, last story for tonight. MB, when I was doing some research and writing about Faulkner, I went down to a setting where one of his novels was geographically situated, again, just a few mile from Mike’s home. Through several contacts and an elderly Baptist minister who also like to trade guns, I met up with an elderly, retired schoolteacher.
She knew everything about the local history all the way back. Well, in the 1930′s and 40′s, her husband used to hunt with his cronies, including William Faulkner. I corresponded with her, and a year later I had been invited to her home.
I was on a trip to FL to visit my Grandparents over Christmas. I drove out of the way to MS. She invited us in, had a grand holiday spread of Southern food for our visit, and she had been digging around, and in an old trunk, she gave some old MS newspaper clippings when Faulkner got the Nobel prize.
She loaned me a limited presentation 1st edition novel, which she later gave to me the following year. But, what really made my heart go thump was when she showed me her son’s military trunk who was killed in WWII, and then finally her late husband’s two hunting guns! Needless to say, I went home with a gift, not really, because she would only sell me one of them that went on the WF hunts!

Years ago, Mike wanted a certain antique S& W and my Dad still had his Federal license, so I located two of them and next year took them down for him to choose. We went to a local shop and did the legal transfers, etc. Then, we had some target practice out back of Mike’s leather shop.
Mike handed me a revolver to fire. Six rounds were shot. Mike told me who handed him that gun while shooting behind Graceland years earlier. Yes, I had just shot one of Elvis’ .357s he had given to Mike. Later, he showed me the original bill of sale received by Vernon in the gun’s original box. That’s the kind of fun I used to have.
Another time he handed me a nice cowboy hat to look over. It belonged to James Arness.
Right now, I ‘m still wearing two rings Mike made for me in 1982.

MB, that has been some years ago, maybe 1980? 1981? I spent a lot more time around Taylor, Oxford, Sardis, Ripley, Holly Springs, Corinth, etc. studying and conferencing at Ole Miss. I met lot of great folks, but many are gone now.

Sharkey…that would be Wade’s barber shop. I absolutely LOVE Clarksdale. If it were feasible I would live there. I love the slow pace, the people and of course the music. Actually, I love all the Delta.
Sherielvis…it’s so good to see you posting. Come back more often.

Rocker,
Her brother, my late father-in-law talked about growing up in CA and sliding down some big cliff, so I know this is where she got started in the roller derby.
She also was an fine artist of oil paintings.
-
Sharkster
MB,
I think you’re right about Robert Johnson. There’s so much of the folklore going on, especially on any Southern tours in the area.
I remember being in Clarksdale, Mississippi, on a hot August morning in the Delta, researching the blues, and we were taken to a barber shop. No haircuts that day! Everyone in the group was served a 16oz. Pepsi in a bottle for a dollar tip. They opened the bottle for you. Then, we got an hour of blues music in that barber shop that lasted a lifetime. I wish I could have recorded the performances! Wow!
-
Sharkster
Rocker,
I think she skated/competed there in CA, as she spoke about it.

A big Hello to everyone!
Thinking of you Diane!
Thanks CB for telling me how to be able to post on here! I finally have taken a few minutes and made it here.
I don’t know where my time goes–well yes I do, computer stuff, tv, visiting friends who can’t get out, work, great grandkids and taking care of all the problems that life gives to me. I’m not complaining–I’d rather be busy than be bored.

Good afternoon. Raining here today. Funny, we have a world wide huge Farm Show going on in town, it always rains on Farm Show weekend!
I went to town to the Vampires place and was going to walk the Farm Show, but it was just too cold there.
Snoopy is starting her Journey tomorrow, should be here by the weekend. I hope it all goes well on her trip. -

I always thought the date of his death was ironic.

Good morning all…
Sharkey…I know they aren’t 100% sure which of the three gravesites for Robert is the actual one but they are pretty sure now that it’s the one I visited. Won’t go into all the details but they found a woman that remembered him being buried in this one.

Since this is thought to be the one, we didn’t go looking for the other two.

MB,
I have spent a lot of time down South, and I have visited two of the three gravesites for Robert Johnson…yes, I know what I typed!
Nearby, just a few miles down the road, there was a country store where years ago I bought two collectibles: PicMor lotion for cotton pickers and BeBop hair tonic. Folks have tried to buy these from me, but they are simply not for sale!

Lady Shark’s aunt, age 87 passed away this morning from a long bout with cancer. She was in hospice care. She had been declining in health recently, and this was a blessing for her. Her own daughter had died from cancer less than a year ago. She was ready to go. There will be no services, sympathy cards, or flowers or grieving per her request. She was a strong, robust person who could do anything; she was a factory welder, rode motorcycles, made ceramics, collected dolls, played the piano, and was in the earliest roller derbies.

Mighty fine Blues song MB….I always liked a Blues Man from Elvis’s home state who everyone covered Including the king. His name Is Jimmy Reed. He was dying slowly of TB….they kept him In Whiskey and Ciggs and kept the recorder going at all times when Jimmy was there. I thought about posting Jimmy doing a song or Elvis doing a Jimmy song then I opted to play Miss Etta singin’ a Jimmy song. Hope you dig It…

Here is a little info on Elvis’ Grammy nominations:
(It would now be 15 nominations)Elvis received 14 Grammy nominations from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). His three wins were for gospel recordings – the album “How Great Thou Art” (1967), the album “He Touched Me” (1972) and his live Memphis concert recording of the song “How Great Thou Art” (1974). In 1971, NARAS also recognized him with their Lifetime Achievement Award (known then as the Bing Crosby Award in honor of its first recipient). Elvis was 36 years old at the time.
Six of Elvis’ recordings, all of them his original studio masters, have been inducted into the NARAS Hall of Fame: “Hound Dog” (1956 recording, inducted 1988); “Heartbreak Hotel” (1956 recording, inducted 1995); “That’s All Right” (1954 recording, inducted 1998); “Suspicious Minds” (1969 recording, inducted 1999); “Don’t Be Cruel” (1956 recording, inducted 2002); and “Are You Lonesome Tonight” (1960 recording, inducted 2007). The Recording Academy’s national trustees established the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 1973 to honor recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old. Many inductees are recordings that were created and released before the 1958 inception of NARAS and the Grammy Awards.

Back In the mid 50′s the Rocker was In the 6th grade as an Army brat I found meself In El Monte California…There was a local L.A. Television show called the Johnny Otis Show…That Is where I watched and listened to Johnny preform his big hit “Willie And The Hand Jive.” Also on that weekly show Johnny would have new and talented folks that he discovered. That is where Etta James got her big break. Etta & Johnny both passed within a few days of each other…..Sigh
I am losing all me heros It would seem….anyway here is a hero still with us from his newest CD….Dion….

CB: OMG…how cute is that little guy…..He is so adorable!! Yeah, it sucks when people waste their lives (and others) because of substance abuse….makes me sick too. Sharkey: you have a good point there! I have to admit I watch it for a couple different reasons. One to try and stay on top of the music, another reason to see the fashion part. (such a girl I am) and even when I do see it…sometimes I’m so shocked and other times I’m amazed at the ones with class….
Today I stayed home and did absolutely nothing! Well I did cook a pork roast with scalloped potatoes for dinner, but other than that not much for me today. Tomorrow it’s off to do errands and get my butt off the couch…haha
Have I mentioned that I’m glad I don’t work?Eddie: It was you? hahahaha….oh my Nana would have loved you! She was such a riot…always kept us all hopping…and she was full of love….(the unconditional kind)
So tonight I watched the dog show. Part two is on tomorrow night. I love learning about the different breeds..and seeing how they judge them. We aren’t going out to dinner tomorrow night because everyone will be doing that…we decided to wait and go Wed or maybe this weekend.
Happy Valentine’s Day to all….I’ll try to check in tomorrow evening if I don’t forget…haha

I am with you Sharkey, it is a waste of time. I love the Music, not the dope heads and all the freaks!
I don’t care who it is, they don’t need to destroy themselves in front of us.
I am sick and fed up with it.
I wish they would take the money they spend on there selfish dope and spend it where it will do the best for say, children with Cancer. OK the rant is over. Well over after I squash all the so called doctors that supply the drugs to them.
Hugs to you Diane. Nighters. -

CB: We have a very good friend (male) that is an entertainer. He is over 50 and has never been married. He loves women, is a very deserving and loving man…and yet he says he can’t seem to find that special someone to share his life with. I don’t get it. He’s an amazing human being. Humble, sensitive, etc….(oh he’s also a big Elvis fan)
I think you forget how much you contribute to other people’s lives. I have always said you are amazing and I still say you are amazing. Your strength inspires me. Sometimes, strong women scare men….hahaha
Funny story about my loving grandmother: (we called her “Nana”)
One time at my Mom’s house, the phone in the office kept ringing and it was this prank caller constantly calling. I told my Mom this guy keeps calling…how do we get rid of him? So my grandmother says “let me answer the next time the phone rings” so the phone rings….my grandmother goes in the office to answer the phone. Here is what transpired. I have no idea what all this guy was saying but I know when I answered he was trying his best to shock me! But not my grandmother…she told this guy “HONEY…..YOU WOULDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH ME IF YOU HAD ME” She said “YOU COULDN’T HANDLE ME” We all laughed so hard. The guy never called back. God, I loved that woman! -

CB: I remember years ago my Mom used to always say “Bring me flowers while I’m alive, not when I’m gone” have you ever noticed that people have this amazing sense of love after someone has left? I can’t stand that either…
Memphisbound: I get so angry at Elvis being left behind. People have no idea how much he paved the way for others. I feel your pain.Oh I forgot to mention Bruce Springsteen….I heard that he is having Clarence’s nephew added to his world tour. Nice move, since Clarence will be so missed at these concerts. I saw Bruce 4 times in a row back from the “Born in the USA” tour and he truly was amazing….Elvis was one of his influences and someone he looked up to…DUH…

Ok, well I watched the Grammys and all I can say is “I MUST BE GETTING OLD” I love music, but I just don’t get Nicki Minaj’s. That whole performance was out there (in my opinion) Glen Campbell cracked me up at the end when he said…”Where do I go or should I just shut up?” I thought Jennifer Hudson did amazing (even though I’m getting tired of hearing about her) You couldn’t help but feel her emotion. Paul McCartney has always been my favorite Beatle so enough said there. Seeing the Beach Boys brought back many memories of my teens. Oh and let’s not forget “Adele” I absolutely love her voice…and was glad to see her so grateful. So there ya go….(Eddie what did u think?)
Diane: My heart aches for you. My wish is that you find strength in all the people who care for you. We never know how long we are here for…my thoughts today are for all of us to appreciate our lives and the time we have with our loved ones. I cannot imagine your pain Diane, and our thoughts and prayers are with you.
One more thing: I will never forget all the love that was outpoured on the Elvis chatboard when I lost my Mom in 2004. You will all never know how that made me feel, just knowing so many cared was amazing and very healing for me. Thank you very much.
Valentines Day: Just a simple note…..Valentine’s Day is supposed to be about love. I think love should be felt every day and not just one day of the year. I love hearts, I love romance, I love See’s Candy (right CB?) but let’s not forget to treat each other with love every day and not just on a holiday. “Happy Valentine’s Day” to all my Elvis friends….xoxo

cowpatti34
Boy are you so right on Eddie about that, thanks.
MB, just wondering, did Elvis ever get any awards for anything other than records sold amount awards?
My feelings about awards after ya die, well forget it!! I think the person should be awarded while they are alive so they can rejoice in there talent and hard work.
I have been nominated for a rather high award, not picked. I want to go there say thank you and touchie feeley it, should I be picked. Hehehe Gimmie me now LOL -

Sorry Eddie – I have no patience (or love) for a group that continues (for whatever reason) to ignore Elvis’ contribution.
“Band on the Run” was released in 1973 and won a Grammy in 1975. So now it’s historical?? Sorry, I think they knew Paul was going to be named the 2012 MusiCare Person of the Year and the the gala event was taking place two days before the Grammy Awards and decided they’d better give the Grammy to him.

Good morning all…
Well, Elvis didn’t win a Grammy last night. He was nominated for Best Historical Album for “Young Man With the Big Beat”, the new set with his 1956 recordings. But no, he lost to Paul McCartney. Now please tell me what is historical about Paul McCartney. Without Elvis’ 56 recordings there would be no Beatles. I had hoped the Grammy voters would get their heads out of……….the sand (not what I wanted to say obviously) and realize the importance of Elvis’ contribution to all music that has come after. But I also didn’t really expect Elvis to win, just hoped.
